Gemell
Unmatched yarn‑level digital twins driving innovation far beyond the textile sector
UN Sustainable Development Goals
Gemell is a deep‑tech startup building the first fully procedural, photorealistic digital‑twin engine for yarn and textile manufacturing. Its ability to model fibres down to the yarn level is unprecedented in the industry. This breakthrough unlocks major efficiency and sustainability gains in textiles and holds potential for wide‑ranging applications across multiple sectors beyond manufacturing.

Problem

Textile waste is mounting across both design and manufacturing. Off‑cut fabrics and sample swatches from prototyping frequently end up in landfill, despite the heavy environmental footprint of textiles. Yarn manufacturing adds another layer of inefficiency: mills often generate substantial waste when yarn fails quality checks or when blending processes fall short. Losses, operational inefficiencies, and theft within the supply chain further exacerbate the problem. Together, these issues highlight major, unregulated waste points across the textile value chain that urgently need innovation.

Solution

Gemell reduces textile waste across both design and manufacturing through advanced 3D fabric visualization and AI‑driven yarn modelling. Photorealistic digital textures replace physical samples, cutting material use, lowering transport‑related emissions, and improving the accuracy of material planning. On the manufacturing side, Gemell’s yarn‑data model predicts yield and key quality metrics from raw cotton inputs, guiding mills toward optimal bale mixing. This improves consistency, reduces failed yarn volumes, and streamlines supply‑chain operations by minimising inefficiencies and losses. Together, these capabilities enhance quality, reduce waste, and support a more sustainable, efficient textile production process.

Gemell Impact Overview

Gemell’s system begins with precise colour and fibre capture using spectrophotometers and high‑resolution cameras, combined with detailed inventories of available yarns. Input from yarn spinners, mills, and fabric manufacturers feeds into a cloud‑based infrastructure that supports accurate data processing. Together, these elements provide the foundation for creating digital twins of individual yarn fibres.

The platform processes this data to generate high‑quality colour and fibre information, builds digital yarn twins, and then virtually applies manufacturing steps such as milling, weaving, and blending. These digital processes mirror real‑world production, enabling Gemell to deliver photorealistic 3D fabric visualisations. As customers onboard and partnerships grow, these outputs streamline prototyping and reduce reliance on physical samples.
Each digital render directly replaces a potential physical sample, allowing waste avoidance to be measured in real time. By eliminating unnecessary material use and sample shipping, Gemell meaningfully reduces waste and supports a more sustainable, efficient textile‑production workflow.

Impact KPIs

Impact Measurement & Management (IMM) Status
ORANGE

Gemell is currently collecting metrics to inform the setting of its KPI targets.

KPI 1
The number of digital renders processed through the software representing a tangible reduction in physical sample production
KPI 2
Reductions in waste levels relative to a defined baseline, reflecting decreases in failed yarn volumes and supply‑chain losses.
